The Rincón Astrolabe Shipwreck

On 30 December 1986, a fisherman incidentally discovered the remains of a seventeenth-century merchantman off the coast of Rincón, a small municipality on Puerto Rico's west coast. Among the objects recovered from the site was a nautical astrolabe. This book presents a study on the sea or mariner's astrolabe, a navigation instrument that played a fundamental role in the process of European maritime expansion. During the fifteenth century, Portuguese navigators saw the need to gradually depart from the traditional Mediterranean navigation technique known as "dead reckoning." As their explorations along the West African coast forced them to sail far into the Atlantic Ocean, a new method was developed that consisted of measuring the angle of certain heavenly bodies above the horizon in order to determine the latitude of the observer. For this purpose, instruments that traditionally belonged to the field of astronomy were adapted by seamen. Among them was the astrolabe, which became the most popular by the turn of the sixteenth century.

The Protection Of The Underwater Cultural Heritage

Madagascar's surrounding waters retain numbers of shipwrecks, both recent and historical. The advance of technology will certainly help to discover even more historical shipwrecks, and with that will come the threat of these heritages exposed to looting. As by the provisions of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage of 2001, most of these shipwrecks are considered as Underwater Cultural Heritage, and therefore need a specific protection regime. Such protection should take place within the framework drawn by the UNESCO Convention, which is the first comprehensive international instrument on the protection of maritime cultural property, alongside with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, together with the national legislation on shipwrecks as it is in Madagascar's Maritime Code.

The Concept Of Collective Ownership In Ship
59,00 € *

The Concept of Collective Ownership in Ship is proposed as a viable policy instrument for managing and responding to the multifaceted problems that confront maritime transportation in general and shipping in particular. The concept of collective ownership lays the justification for making the safety and security of shipping a priority in national, regional and global policy space. Elements of the concept can be found in historical and contemporary shipping practices including bottomry, general average, salvage and limitation of liability. It is noted that a fundamental challenge in the maritime industry is how to maintain a delicate balance between the need to safeguard private rights (exclusive interest) and the requirement to adopt policies and laws that are crucial for safety and security of shipping. What the concept of collective ownership does is to navigate the complexity and provide a logical basis for accommodating exclusive rights within the larger inclusive interest of society. In so doing the concept guarantees the protection of both exclusive and inclusive interests in maritime trade whilst ensuring that the productive elements and benefits of shipping are maximised.
